Lesson 12: Rules for Relations in a Christian Household
Colossians 3:18-21 — study notes
Scripture: Colossians 3:18-21 (ESV)
18 Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
19 Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them.
20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.
21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.
1) Introduction
Paul addresses the order and responsibilities within the Christian household. God designed this structure not because one spouse is superior or inferior to the other, but so that families and churches would have order, direction, and not chaos. These verses invite us not merely to study them intellectually, but to feel their weight and learn how to live them in the Lord.
2) Colossians 3:18 — Wives and Submission
"Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord."
- This submission is rooted in the Lord, not in superiority of intelligence or worth. The wife is not inferior to the husband; rather, this design reflects a God-given structure for order in the home and church.
- Ephesians 5:23-24 parallels this teaching: as Christ is the head of the church, so the husband is the head of the wife. The wife's submission mirrors the church's relationship to Christ.
- This submission is a spiritual act "as unto the Lord" — impossible without Christ living in us. The goal is not duty or punishment for sin, but loving partnership under God's design.
Ephesians 5:23-24 (ESV)
23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.
24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.
3) Colossians 3:19 — Husbands and Love
"Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them."
- The measure of love required of husbands is the same love with which Christ loved the church — a self-giving, sacrificial love (Eph. 5:25). This standard is humanly impossible without Christ dwelling in the husband.
- Husbands are specifically warned not to be bitter toward their wives — a reminder that leadership in the home must be marked by grace, not harshness or resentment.
- Paul directs responsibility for love and direction squarely at the husband. Wives' submission and husbands' love are equally demanding — both require Christ at the center.
Ephesians 5:25 (ESV)
25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,
4) Colossians 3:20-21 — Children and Fathers
"Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord. Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged."
- Children must be guided and loved before they can understand why obedience matters. Parents can bring children to church and model Christ at home, but cannot save them — only God can.
- In today's culture, the enemy provides many distractions for young people. Parents must portray Christ in their own lives as the foundation for their children's faith.
- Fathers carry the responsibility of correction and direction, but must walk the fine line between correcting and provoking. Discipline must always be wrapped in love, not harshness, to avoid discouraging children.
Action Plan for This Week
- Scripture rhythm. Read Colossians 3:18-21 aloud once this week with your family or privately, and reflect on which role applies to you.
- Serve the group. Share one way you have seen love, submission, or correction modeled well in a Christian home, and offer one prayer request related to your own household.
- Take one step of intentional love or reconciliation. Husbands, show sacrificial love in a tangible way; wives, find one area to trust God's design; parents, encourage your children without provoking.
