Bible Text – Ephesians 6:1–4 (NASB)
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
2 Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise),
3 so that it may turn out well for you, and that you may live long on the earth.
4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
1. Introduction
There are many commandments in the Bible. These are rules and directives from God to guide us to live a life "worthy of our calling."
There are some commandments that have a promise attached. In chapter 5 we have several commandments but none have a specific promise.
2. Children Obey Your Parents
There are promises that are so clear and direct that you can take those "to the bank", absolutely guaranteed by God. Two examples: Ephesians 6:1-3 and Malachi 3:10
In v1 there is a reference to what is "right" or just.
The Jews had invalidated the Word (the command) by their traditions, which Jesus rebuked them for.
The reference in vv. 1 to 3 is to the 5th commandment, see Exodus 20:12.
3. Practical Advice to Parents
Parents by their virtue and divine appointment have authority over their children, especially when they are minors. V4 Paul is saying to not assert that authority to make their children angry or resentment.
A parallel scripture is found in Colossians 3:20-21. In Colossians 3:21 says so that they don't become discouraged.
In Ephesians 6:4 we get a better approach to parenting "bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord."
With meekness and gentleness (2 Corinthians 10:1) following Christ's example.
